Detection of a Bolide in Jupiter's Atmosphere With Juno UVS

نویسندگان

چکیده

The UVS instrument on the Juno mission recorded transient bright emission from a point source in Jupiter's atmosphere. spectrum shows that is consistent with 9600-K blackbody located 225 km above 1-bar level and duration of was between 17 ms 150 s. These characteristics are bolide Based energy emitted, we estimate impactor had mass 250-5000 kg, which corresponds to diameter 1-4 m. By considering all observations made over first 27 perijoves mission, an impact flux rate 24,000 per year for impactors masses greater than kg.

Juno‐UVS approach observations of Jupiter's auroras

Juno ultraviolet spectrograph (UVS) observations of Jupiter's aurora obtained during approach are presented. Prior to the bow shock crossing on 24 June 2016, the Juno approach provided a rare opportunity to correlate local solar wind conditions with Jovian auroral emissions. Some of Jupiter's auroral emissions are expected to be controlled or modified by local solar wind conditions. Here we com...

Recent Advances in Bolide Entry Modeling: a Bolide Potpourri*

In this paper, we will review recent research on numerous aspects of bolide entry into a planetary atmosphere, including such topics as the entry dynamics, energetics, ablation, deceleration, fragmentation, luminosity, mechanical wave generation processes, a total (panchromatic) power budget including differential and integral efficiencies versus time, etc. Fragmentation, triggered by stagnatio...

Jupiter's interior and deep atmosphere: The initial pole-to-pole passes with the Juno spacecraft.

On 27 August 2016, the Juno spacecraft acquired science observations of Jupiter, passing less than 5000 kilometers above the equatorial cloud tops. Images of Jupiter's poles show a chaotic scene, unlike Saturn's poles. Microwave sounding reveals weather features at pressures deeper than 100 bars, dominated by an ammonia-rich, narrow low-latitude plume resembling a deeper, wider version of Earth...
